How to Bargain With the Insurance Company

October 14th, 2009

Bargaining isn’t really most people’s specialty; everyone wants a better or cheaper deal, but only few who is willing to ask for one. Its mostly fear that steps in first when people hear the word bargaining, but it’s the bust of joy when people hear the word bargain. So how to bargain when it comes to facing against the mighty big insurance companies. I had a friend who crashed his car and had to pay $2000 excess fee due to his age, he spent a few hour explaining how the car was under his dads name and that when his dad sign up for the insurance plan, the sales person informed his dad that his son can drive the car at least three times a year and if his son ever gets involved in an accident within those three times, his son would be cover and there is nothing to be paid, expect for $500 of excess fee. My friend spent a long time explaining his situation and asked if there is anyway that the fee could be reduce, with the effort he spent, the operator actually did decided to reduce the excess fee by half, so at the end of the day he still had to buy $1000 but he also saved $1000 with an hour of work.

So I put this theory of his to the test when I decide to change my auto insurance company, I rang up a ad that I saw when I was browsing the net, I got quote of $560 per year after giving all my information on the net, it was actually $20 more expensive then my previous insurance company, so I decide to put my new developed bargaining skill to the test, I told the operator that it should be cheaper, because they I took there online quote and got a cheaper quote then what she gave me (even though I didn’t actually took an quote online), the operator was surprised and said, please give me a moment, the next thing you know, she cut the quote down to $380, it was simple as that. The key thing that most people forget is that you’re the customer; the insurance company would do anything to obtain you as their customer then losing you to another company.

What I am trying to say is that even big insurance companies is at the same position as a small store at your local market, you can adjust the price simply by asking, it doesn’t really hurt to say “is there any other way to cut down the quote” or “can you help me find a plan that suit me but cheaper”.
